Both are spiral galaxies similar to our Milky Way, but are 20 or 30 million light years away from us. The first is the Pinwheel Galaxy, and the second is a pair of gravitationally interacting galaxies known as the Whirlpool Galaxy.
In the space around the galaxies, several smaller companion galaxies are visible. These can be distinguished from stars by their fuzzy appearance.
